The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these time periods often feature a crown a part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is an copper-nickel fifty lepta of a type struck 1954-65. The obverse features the portrait of King Paul I. It accompanied by one (KM 81), two (KM 82) and five drachmai (KM 83).
